One of those rare moments where I find myself approving a fan project. He's made a few FF videos like these. I was just shown this today, so my opinion might go 360 by tomorrow :P.
Anyway, what I really like about this guy is that he does what almost every other person does NOT do when making interpretations or covers of songs. Something I personally always considered, but figured other people forgot or weren't able to portray in a reinterpretation.
What am I talking about? Well, the fact that he makes a big deal out of having ALL the sounds and instruments from the original song covered. Not just the main melody or melodies. Even with a piano that makes playing 2 different melodies at the same time possible - while it can still sound beautiful - it rarely accounts for the little sounds that make up the original pieces and help give the song even stronger effects.
Not only does this guy cover all the instruments/sounds, but he also gets the notes right. Admittedly, there are times where I would argue his voice should go higher to reach the perfect identical note, but I can live with the half-to-whole tone he brings it down at times, because his pitching is flawless (the jump from one note to the next). In short, this guy has studied the songs he makes acapella versions of.
I prefer this video over his others. I especially love his whistling during the climax piece, which is top notch in both length and height. Again, I am glad to see someone else took note of how these are done, instead of just whistling the notes normally (yes, I get obsessive about perfection, lol... Nothing new there).
I would however argue that he uses some editing tools to make his videos sound better. And I mean more than the obvious. For instance, notice window where he whistles and see what he does towards the end of it. Doesn't match the sound we hear. Also, it sounds almost too perfect to be real.
His Aerith video doesn't impress me too much. He definitely turned on the editing tools, but it makes sense to get that sense of hollow sound. A few places it sounds pretty good though.
JENOVA... Well... Same thing I guess. He should take some of the notes up a notch or 2 though, to match the note from the game.
To Zanarkand. I find that it lacks the emotion brought out through a piano, and it sounds more like he is doing an enterpretation of the midi-version, which he in turn does pretty well, lol. While I don't find the video outstanding, it does bring me some joy to see that he times his notes well for the main part of the song. And knowing how it's played on piano, makes me recall the emotion tied to playing the left hand side of the song. He's just good at his timing :P. Could be editing again.
