    Admitting defeat

Director and Producer of FFXIV have both stepped down, and the PS3 version has been delayed. Square Enix official statement reads:

Thank you for your continued interest in and support of FINAL FANTASY XIV.

While more than two months have passed since the official launch of FINAL FANTASY XIV service, we deeply regret that the game has yet to achieve the level of enjoyability that FINAL FANTASY fans have come to expect from the franchise, and for this we offer our sincerest of apologies.

After thorough deliberation on how to meet those expectations, it was decided that the most viable step was to approach improvements under new leadership and with a restructured team.

To realize this vision, and in doing so, provide our customers with a better game experience, we have assembled our company's top talent and resources. Taking over the role of producer and director is Naoki Yoshida, a passionate individual for whom customer satisfaction has always taken top priority. Not only is he one of our Group's most accomplished and experienced members, Naoki Yoshida is also a charismatic leader possessing the skill to bring together and effectively helm a team which encompasses a wide range of responsibilities. We also welcome several new leaders handpicked from other projects to work with the existing talent on FINAL FANTASY XIV.

We realize time is of the essence and are fully determined to provide our customers with quality service. It is because of this that we ask our customers to be patient until we are able to confidently present them with a concrete plan outlining FINAL FANTASY XIV's new direction. The free trial period will be extended until that time.

Regarding the PlayStation 3, it is not our wish to release a simple conversion of the Windows version in its current state, but rather an update that includes all the improvements we have planned. For that reason, we have made the difficult decision to delay the release of the PlayStation 3 version beyond the originally announced date of March 2011.

The FINAL FANTASY XIV team is working hard to bring our customers an unparalleled adventure, and we ask for your continued understanding and support as we march ever diligently towards that goal.

    President and CEO, Yoichi Wada

=o. Had read about the delay but not the whole speech and stepping down. That's pretty big. But in a turn of events, this actually gave me some more respect for SE's decision. Instead of foolishily pushing on when the situation doesn't better itself, they try new ways and trust someone else with the expertise to see the game through to success. And their explanation behind the PS3 delay was very understandable. Before readin his statement on the matter, I just took it as another SE delay (although they have been more sparse of late)... The quote is thoroughly explained and sensible. It's not always that they choose to give people a good explanation for a delay, although there obviously always must be a good reason. They don't delay a game for fun.

You mean like they did for the past few months?

Throwing out "continued free trials" to latch onto some kind of fanbase for the game?

Well it's a way of saying you don't have to pay to play this game when we aren't satisfied with it ourselves yet? I'd say that's a pretty awesome thing to do. The only thing that isnt awesome is that they WILL start wanting money once the game has reached a satisfactory state. Still don't like payed subscriptions :P

SE should give up with MMO's altogether. I don't like MMO's at all just because of the paid subscription, FFXI wasn't entertaining at all, and SE failed further with FFXIV, To be honest if they weren't happy with it they shouldn't have released it in the first place, game companies seem to get away with so much now adays, is it really too much to ask that we get a product that is complete, up to a high standard and with no bugs.

They could've you know. . .Not released the game?

It's a cock-up from Square Enix, and they've paid the price. They have went about this game wrong and its just an utter failure of a game. There is no silver lining. They fucked up.

I get the impression that unless XV is met with universal acclaim, it might be wise to just bring an end to the franchise all together.

The creators may have had a vision that looked good in theory but that they only could see wasn't complete once it was released. Also, when the whole world is suddenly playing a game, it's not weird that you get to find out what's working and what isn't compared to testers.

They had a beta testing, and didn't listen to the testers.

They complained constantly about the economy of the game but SE didn't listen at all.

    They dun gone fucked up.
